Back in January, my Dave Ramsey-esque husband started a collection envelope with “Vacation Money” written on the outside. We saved a little here and there, and decided the three of us would take our first family vacation to the Gulf Coast beaches. I’m glad he started that little envelope. We had a grand time.
Sam had the most fun of any of us. When I say he loved the beach, I mean it with every ounce of my being. He loved the beach!
Let me back up a bit. On our way south, we got to stop through Opp, AL to visit and eat lunch with our friends, the Breedloves. I could kick myself for not getting a picture of them. They are precious people. The type that you can just pick up where you left off. RB (I’ll use initials since I didn’t ask permission) is the pastor of First Baptist Opp. If that’s your neck of the woods, you should visit sometime. Good, expository, theologically-sound preaching….yes! And I hear the pastor’s wife if pretty awesome, too.
Once we arrived at the beach, we immediately took the Sam Man to dig his toes in the sand. That didn’t last too long. Obviously, the “wa-wa” is where it’s at.
We’ve never really been big bike-riders, but decided we’d take the plunge and try ‘em out one day. Scott thought maybe he should practice around the block first, to make sure the ol’ saying “it’s like riding a bike; you never forget!” is really true. We both agreed the saying should be “it’s like riding a bike; you may be a little rusty, but you can always fake it!”
It was real fun. I may or may not have asked if we could purchase a pair when we got home.
Another Broken Egg was about 2 miles from where we lodged, so we bicycled there for breakfast one morning. Have you ever experienced Another Broken Egg? It’s something good. Real good. Breakfasty food is our favorite, hence why we had a 10:00 A.M. wedding, I guess.
The rest of our days were spent by the pool, sipping smoothies, and cheering on Lady Liberty at the Fourth of July parade.
After the parade, I ran into Erika, who couldn’t be nice enough. We all “know” Erika, right? She hugged my neck, and I believe I mustered up a “love your blog, girl!” in the midst of our small talk. She’s big time, but doesn’t act big time, you know? I like people like that.
At night, all the children from around the area would gather in the amphitheater to play. There wasn’t a dry thread on Sam’s body every night. He was thoroughly delighted when we turned him loose to play, trying his darnedest to keep up with the big kids. Capri Suns helped reel him in for a “break,” but he was up and at ‘em before I could even think of wiping the sweat from his forehead.
Sweet memories were had by all. Lord-willing, I see many more family vacations in our future. Thank you, husband, for taking us and saving up for us! What a great blessing.
