A Good Remedy for Yourself

I have needed to preach this to myself all. day. today. so I figured I would type it out and preach it to you, too.  It’s a good remedy for yourself.

Lately, I have done a most excellent job displaying my pride.  My love of myself.  My thinking I deserve something.  My desire to be thought well of.  My thoughts of being better than others.  My obsessive self-consciousness.

It’s quite miserable.  And disgusting.

Because sin is miserable and disgusting.  What God forbids will never bring happiness.  What God forbids will always bring misery.

But we aren’t left in our misery.  There’s a remedy.

Christ is better.  He is better than yourself.  Intoxicated with thoughts of how I ought to be treated or how I ought to be thought of, I have needed to preach Christ to myself without ceasing this week.  He’s the only medicine to cure the disease of myself.

So, if you need a dose of truth this week, here it is: you are prone to wander, prone to sin.  It’s our miserable nature.  We are sinners.  Repent and believe!  Turn from yourself and trust Christ’s goodness, not your petty good deeds.  He has been gracious to you, and the more sinful you are, the more mercy you get.  What a savior!  The way a gentle shepherd tends to and cares for his sheep, so Christ deeply cares for you and me.  He loves His children!  Rest in His goodness, and trust that He is better than any recognition, “deserved” treatment, or love from others.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels or rules, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation {like myself} will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38-39

What a great post, Emily! I too have recognized my own pride and have been "preaching Christ" to myself as of late. (And the good Lord knows that I've needed to do it long before now.) You are not alone!

I have had a terrible few months with my Dad being sick at UAB and being pulled in 1000 directions. Hard not to get caught up in the why's and doubts of sin...I need to ALWAYS be reminded to keep my eyes focused on HIM and HIS plan not mine. I need to make my needs and wants smaller and HIS larger. Thank you for encouraging me.
